A superb view of this major and important French town. The Medieval town can be seen spreading on either bank of the River Saone. Many churches can be found, together with city walls and many tightly packed dwellings. Travellers and assorted tradesmen can be seen in the foreground. Matthaus Merian's Topographia was a vast work, originally published in 21 volumes in 1640, remaining in print until 1730. Size: 320 x 370 mm. Uncoloured copperplate engraving. Excellent condition, some discolouration to the central fold and margins.
