The original signed illustration for the 1908 edition of Sense and Sensibility published by J. M. Dent & Co. in their Series of English Idylls. Charles Brock and his brother Henry prided themselves on the historical accuracy of their illustrations; they collected antique furniture and clothing, and used friends and relations to model them in their Cambridge studio.
Charles Brock was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in the same year as publication of these illustrations.
The illustration shows Marianne walking out alone after a sleepless night weeping over Mr Willoughby.
