This wonderful engraving is of The Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome. It is the ecclesiatical seat of the Bishop of Rome (The Pope) and is the 'head church' of the Roman Catholic world. It is the oldest (consecrated in the fourth century) and most important of the four Papal Basilicas of Rome.
