One of a set of four prints that originally appeared in the 1728 Atlas Novus. This curious image shows a pope, sceptre in one hand, the other hand raised. On his body is a list of all the popes from the first to the seventeenth-century. In the background, to the left is the dome of St. Peters, Rome, and to his right is a pile of papal paraphenalia- abook, mitres, a hat, an incense burner.
Copper engraving. Hand coloured.
Cropped close to edge of plate. Very good condition.
Size: 49 x 57 cm. (19½ x 22½ inches).
